Investment into Three’s network will vastly increase bandwidth countrywide and will facilitate speeds up to 100Mb
Three, Ireland’s largest high speed mobile network, today announced a €38 million contract with BT, which will see BT’s fibre network rolled out to over 200 new mobile sites and support to a further 1,000 sites that currently serve Three’s customer base. These sites are located nationwide and include Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway cities and counties. The roll-out of this fibre network, which will take place over the next 18 months, will allow higher broadband speeds enabling Three to deliver up to 100Mb per second to facilitate the demands of data-savvy Irish consumers.
BT Ireland has provided transmission solutions to Three for the past 7 years and in the last year has developed a Total Transmission Solution – a unique end-to-end bandwidth transmission solution. BT’s Total Transmission solution, which is future-proofed and ready for LTE (next generation 4G services), involves the expansion of fibre-based access transmission into Three’s Radio Access Networks allowing higher broadband speeds of up to 100Mb per second per site across the network. It is a highly competitive leading-edge IP transmission solution and will involve the transition to an IP-based solution over a 24-month period.
This roll-out will deliver an enhanced broadband service for Three customers with larger bandwidth capacity and further improved mobile broadband quality. The partnership will also help Three from a cost perspective facilitating lower total cost of operation, bandwidth scalability and flexibility.
Welcoming the announcement, Robert Finnegan CEO of Three, commented: “As Ireland’s largest high speed mobile network, Three has invested over €800 million in infrastructure in Ireland to deliver much-needed voice, text and broadband services. The smartphone economy is driving huge demand for data services and analysts expect over 340 million smartphones to be sold this year worldwide. Three is at the forefront of the smartphone economy in Ireland and this announcement today is not only significant for Irish consumers but also Ireland Inc. Three has also fully embraced the smartphone revolution through offering the most innovative services and ground-breaking ‘All you can eat’ data plans.
Three was the first Irish operator to bridge the digital divide by delivering broadband to rural Ireland through the National Broadband Scheme. Today’s announcement of a further €38 million investment into our network strengthens Three’s position as the Irish consumer champion and market-leader as we commit to enhancing our network with the technology to deliver up to 100mb per second nationwide .”
Graham Sutherland, BT Ireland, CEO, commented: “Securing this contract reaffirms BT’s position at the forefront of the managed services industry in Ireland. We have worked with Three for the past 7 years, and are delighted to deliver innovative solutions that add value to their business and growth strategy. Key features of this new solution such as ethernet network bandwidth with scalability and flexibility will enable Three to stay competitive by providing a market leading network for their customers.”
Three’s Chief Technology Officer, David Hennessy commented, “Three is delighted to partner with BT Ireland for this fibre roll-out as they have unrivalled knowledge of the implementation of our network. Their existing responsibilities for both Core and Access Transmission support will enable Three to have an integrated end-to-end transmission support service, reducing the need for us to manage multiple service supplier interfaces leading to many operational benefits.”
With the current mobile data explosion in Ireland, this €38 million investment by Three reinforces its commitment to delivering the largest high speed mobile network to data-savvy Irish consumers. It will ensure Three remains one step ahead of the competition in this powerful smartphone economy by offering speeds of up to 100Mb per second across the network through this leading-edge IP transmission solution.
