“If we qualify for a major tournament we’re putting our name in lights”
Women’s National Team captain Katie McCabe dreams of leading Ireland out at the World Cup
4th April 2018: This weekend, the Ireland Women’s National Team will line out for the first of two major World Cup qualifying games. As part of #TheCallUp campaign, Three, proud sponsors of the Ireland football team, sat down with Ireland’s 22-year-old captain Katie McCabe ahead of the crucial ties.
The Arsenal striker recalls that she never had any doubts about becoming a professional footballer growing up, the challenge lay in how she was to go about achieving that goal. “It was hard work. It was going to every training session I could. Whether it was playing on a Saturday with a lads’ team and then playing on a Sunday with a girls’ team.”
Growing up playing in both boys’ and girls’ teams, McCabe had the perfect response to any boys mocking a girl playing football by reminiscing how “you put a goal in the back of the net and that keeps them quiet”.
The Irish skipper knows how important qualification for the World Cup will be to a younger generation of Irish football fans. “It gives those girls in grassroots football that incentive to go and play for the senior team.”
