Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann drives 71% increase in 4G data through Three’s superfast network in Ennis
Three is Ireland’s leading mobile data operator, carrying more mobile data than all other operators combined.
Wednesday 24th August: Three customers in Ennis Co. Clare, attending this year’s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, shared every moment of the action online with a huge surge in 3G and 4G data usage at the event.
Compared to an average week in Ennis, 4G usage increased by an incredible 71%, with 3G usage growing by 59%. Three’s state-of-the art 4G network accommodated 93% more mobile users throughout the festival.
In total, 13.8 terabytes passed through Three’s network in Ennis alone, throughout Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. What does this look like?

Elaine Carey, Chief Commercial Officer at Three commented: “According to the most recent ComReg report, we carry 54% of all mobile data traffic through our network. 51% of all our data traffic comes from sites in rural areas. Consumer appetite for mobile data is constantly growing and our customers love to capture every moment of their festival experiences on their smartphones and share them online. With 4G and 4G Plus, now available in Ennis, this is easier than ever.”
People in Ennis, and surrounding areas, are now benefitting from significant improvements in connectivity following the commencement of Three’s Big Upgrade programme. The Big Upgrade programme, which Three is implementing across the country, involves investing a massive €300m into the rollout of a state-of-the-art 4G network which will bring customers more coverage and better speeds.
Following recent work in Ennis, and the surrounding area (see list below), there has been a 40% increase in 2G and 3G sites and an incredible 500% increase in 4G sites. Three customers in the area can now also access Three’s 4G Plus technology with peak speeds of 225Mbps.
