3, Ireland’s largest high speed network, has today unveiled the new trophy for this year’s 3 Irish Open, which takes place from the 29th July to 1st August in Killarney.  The trophy was designed by National College of Art and Design student Michelle Kiely after she won a competition run by 3 with the NCAD to come up with the concept for this year’s prize trophy.

The piece, which is called Perfect Swing and is made from cut and polished crystal from Waterford and Newbridge silver, it has taken 10 weeks to produce after the winning design was selected.  The brief for the competition was to find an innovative and contemporary trophy to present to this year’s 3 Irish Open winner.

The concept of the trophy according to designer Michelle Kiely is “inspired by the swing of the golf club on teeing off but represents the complete game from the perfect swing to the final act of putting the ball.”

Elaine Carey, Sales and Marketing Director, 3 said; “Michelle’s design looked fantastic when we saw it at presentation stage but now that we can see it for real it is the perfect reward for any golfer who is lucky enough, and skilful enough, to win this year’s 3 Irish Open.  We wanted a unique trophy this year and Michelle’s design encapsulates everything about the 3 Irish Open.  It is an excellent opportunity for one of the aspiring designers at NCAD to be able to produce a trophy for one of the Europe’s top sporting events and we are delighted with the results and now everyone can enjoy her work. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club over the August Bank holiday weekend.”

On seeing her design Michelle Kiely said; “I was pretty clear on the concept I wanted to produce for the 3 Irish Open trophy and I was so excited to be chosen as the winner.  However to be involved in the production of the trophy and to be able to see it take shape and touch it, it is a great feeling.  I just hope now that everyone else likes it, including the winner of course!”

This year’s 3 Irish Open will take place at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club in Kerry over the August Bank Holiday weekend from the 29th July to 1st August.  The event will be staged on the magnificent Killeen course in Killarney and will attract the top names in world golf to Ireland.  For more information on the 3 Irish Open go to www.3golf.ie
