People in Sligo and Galway account for a large proportion of Twitter followers in Ireland.

Three, Ireland’s largest high speed network and official National Broadband Scheme provider, today reported that there will be a significant increase of data usage on the 17th March, as Irish people both home and abroad contact friends and family throughout the world for St. Patrick’s Day.

The popularity of connecting with loved ones using social networking sites continues to rise with Skype, Facebook and Twitter the 3 most popular sites used by Irish people. Sligo and Galway have the highest Twitter following outside of Dublin and Mullingar – Sligo accounts for 12% of the followers and Galway 11%.

With more and more people in rural Ireland wishing to join this social networking trend, Three and the National Broadband Scheme are enabling them to do this, connecting the previously unconnected. The total value of the investment required to implement the National Broadband Scheme was €223m, of which the Government contributed €79.8m.

The NBS is co-funded by the EU under the European Regional Development Fund 2007-2013.
